Segments: Students who care about the environment. The people I chose to interview were college students who are environmentally cautious.
This need becomes the most salient for my interviewees when they are at their respective universities, when they are taking out the trash/taking out the recycling/when they want to take out their recycling but are unable to. For my first interview, their apartment does not have a recycling option, so they must throw all their trash out despite the fact that they care about the environment greatly and would recycle if their apartment had that option. So they did not have a solution to their problem. My other interviewee lives in a dorm, and they only recycle their cardboard boxes because it is the most convenient where they live. They also do not have a solution to their problem because they do not control the waste management in their schools dorms. For my last interview, she keeps a bin in her room just for recycling so she occasionally takes it out when she remembers to. The recycling for her building is downstairs and not close to the trash chutes at all so it is a hassle but she makes an effort to bring down the recycling every so often. She finds this solution to work but would like it to be better and easier. Her source of information was the people who work in her building that showed her where she could take out her recycling.
From my interviews I learned that 2/3 of my interviews with this unmet need have not found their own solutions to their recycling problems and that the one that does have a solution does not like it and thinks it could be better. I also learned that they were getting their information from the people working in their buildings, or from just watching where other people take out their trash. From this I can conclude that for students like these, who would like to have easier recycling options, this product would make them very happy and allow them to recycle more as they would like to.
This segment:
Many students would like to recycle more but the resources are not their for them as they should be. Many students that I have spoken to (including the ones in this interview) are very aware of the lack of recycling accessibility in their university live situations. Obviously, this product cannot be sold individually to students, but they can demand it at their universities. This product could be sold to developers.
Martha,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your interviews for the product behind recycling as it is an issue that is currently pressing on hand. The last interview in particular is one that resonates with myself because i have my own way of recycling and when the time comes I go to make the effort to recycle it because it is not a convenient way but it still must be done. It was a good segment and if sold right can be beneficial. Thank you for sharing your insights!
Martha,
ReplyDeleteI know for sure that your product would help and satisfy many students with an environment mentality here in Gainesville. I have recycling bins where I live but your idea is just amazing. Thank you for sharing your way of thinking and for creating this idea. You have solid points and a good perspective of what you want to do, even if you don't actually do this idea keep that mentality.
